Can an sm58 get damaged from broken cable?

I've connected my sm58 to a phantom powered mixer using an apparently broken XLR cable. Sometimes when the cable was moved, the mic itself produced pops and crackles from within the capsule.
Now that I've replaced the cable, I'm concerned about any damage that might was caused to the mic by the previous one. Is it possible?

I don't think so ..... but you said you heard noises coming from the capsule?
Phantom power can't hurt a dynamic microphone ... but the noise from the capsule?
I would be more concerned with your speakers/monitors than your SM58 if they were on and live when all of this happened.

That can happen, remember a dynamic capsule is like a little speaker in reverse. They are rather robust though so I would not anticipate damage.

OK I've tested and it works fine

I think, it sounds OK. I have nothing to compare to (different setup now).
