Alesis Multimix - High pitched noise with usb connection

Hi everyone. I'm a long time lurker but this is my first post. I'm sorry if it's not in the right forum (if so, let me know. I see that there's an Alesis forum, for example, but it doesn't seem to get any traffic and this may be a more problem more general to USB recording anyway).

I'm having a problem doing some computer recording. I've just received an Alesis Multimix USB recorder, and when i hooked it up to my computer, i've found that when i arm a track in my recording software, i get a high pitched noise. I sent an email to Alesis's tech support, but i have some friends coming over to jam tomorrow and i was hoping to record the session. I don't know if Alesis will get back to me in time so i was hoping maybe someone here could help. I've included the email i sent to Alesis below; it should contain all the details of my situation.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this!

Hello,

I just today received my Multimix 8 USB from
MusiciansFriend.com.

I've hooked it up to my Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop and
set up Cakewalk's Sonar 4 to recognize the audio
signal, and i am able to record with no problem.

However, i am also sending the output from the mixer
to a Roland KC-550 keyboard amp. When the USB cable
is connected to my computer and (only when) a track is
armed to record, the amp generates an annoying high
pitched noise.

The noise does not show up on the recording.

The noise occurs whether i use the Main or Control
Room outputs. It occurs at the same volume regardless
of the volume of the Main or Control Room output
knobs. It occurs regardless of whether i have
instruments plugged into the inputs, and regardless of
the levels for the inputs.

I have not had this problem with another USB device
that i also use to record (my Digitech GNX4 Guitar
Workstation).

I've tried with the mixer plugged in to the same surge
protector as my laptop as well as on a different
circuit. I've also tried with the laptop operating
only on battery power.

I've tried with my Operating System (Windows XP) using
the USB Audio Codac as the Default Device, and also
with my laptop's soundcard as the Default Device.

Finally, i've also tried using different recording
software (Cool Edit Pro 2).

I can't get rid of the noise. What am i missing?

Thanks,
Rod Brady
