AKG C414 XLII + Yamaha M406 + Mbox/FL Studio DAW

Hi!

I just got my hands on a Yamaha Mixer M406 that was suggested for me to use as a preamp for my AKG C414... I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with this kind of set up and possible starting point settings to use to get that Rich, Clean sound you hear from analog front ends.

I heard using a tube mic might be better in achieving that sound but would like to see the potential of what I am using now.

Any tips/settings/suggestions?

My Current Set up:

Mic ----> M406(using phantom) ------> Mbox 2 ------> FL Studio

:)

um, the c414 (there are two types actually) are notoriously NOT warm. The xlII has a big hump at around 6 KHz and the xls has a smaller hump around 11-12 KHz. These are mics known for their clarity and sheen, not warmth. You may be able to use a tube type mic preamp to warm it up a little but IMHO you might be better off with a dynamic like an sm57,58 or beta 58. Take a look through the posts in recording for lotsa mic suggestions with there uses that others have successfully used and the sound they're getting with them.
