Why are the playback levels hotter than the recording levels?

Im using a Beheringer 6 channel mixer to mix my drums and send it to a Yamaha 4 track tape recorder. Levels are fine at record time but when i play it back levels are way to high and distorted. What gives?

Also what kind of cable should i be using to send the signal from the mixer to the tape deck?

I had a similar problem once.
I was monitoring the levels before tape, when I should have been doing so after tape.
Basically the signal was being amplified after the point at which I was monitoring the VU meter, but before tape.
Also people get this problem when plugging Semi-Proffesional with Proffesional equiptment. Pro equiptment works at +4dBu(1.23V) and Semi-Pro at -10dBV(0.316V).If you have a +4dB/-10dB switch on the back of the behringer mixer try -10dB.
Hope this helps.
