vocal sample isolation

How do you isolate the vocal on a sampled song? I want to sample a vocal line but I dont want the music that goes with it. I hear it done all the time, how?

I once heard a comparison that seperating different tracks in a mix is kinda like trying to separate eggs and flour after you've mixed them together.

Yea I've been trying it today without much luck. I cut the lows and highs down and that helped but its still far from passable.

Anyone have suggestions?

The only thing I can think of is if the vocal is equal volume left and right, and all the intruments are more to the left or the right, you could use some system to only allow through sounds which are equal L and R, and reject all else. It would be easy if you wanted to reject the vocal, you'd simply subtract L from R (ie add L in antiphase to R). Vocal would vanish and some other instruments would be reduced in volume. But keeping only vocal - some sophisticated software would do it
