using my effects unit

i want to record vocals to my 4 track cassette and everyone tells me to use a compressor with the mike. Now i have a toneworks ax3000g guitar effects processor. my question is, can i just mic my vocals into that and use the bulit in "compressor", or would that mess it up?...also, what oder do i use the "compressor" in. do i use it while recording my vocals or after during mixdown?

you can compress during tracking or mixing down.
