Even though I use cubase, I always recommend Reaper to people who are new because it's an affordable full featured DAW. A lot of other DAWs at the price point are low on features. Plus at $60 (it's still that much right?) it's not like it's painful if you admit recording isn't for you.
In my opinion the DAW you start on is the DAW you are most likely to stick with. Had Reaper been a thing when I got into this I probably would have gone with it.
