rack rails need which nuts?

I have a used rack that has round holes on the rails. The square rack nuts won't fit. Which is the best option for me?

Are you talking about a SKB-type thing where there are "inserts" that sit in the oversized holes? If so, getting some of those is basically your only option.

You need to find some clip on threaded pieces 10 32 thread. This is similar to the stuff used for car speaker installs.
Another option is to put a wood strip behing the metal rail and use wood screws to hold your gear. You can find ones that look just like rack screws

If UK, old racks used M6 "cage nuts" later racks M5. USA uses 10/32 UNF but M5 will go if you are careful not to strip them.

I strongly urge you to investigate "Rack Snaps" or "Humfrees" These insulate the panels from the rack and each other and can help enormously in beating hum/ground loops.

Dave.
