query: voice recording software?

Hi,

I would like to record telephone interviews using a telephone
line tap plugged into my sound card. (An example of an interview I have
in mind would be John Horgan, author of "The Undiscovered Mind".
See: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0684850753/o/qid=941040050/sr=2-1/002-0441675-2025052
)

The sound files would then be uploaded to a web site, where visitors
would be able to download them for free.

I run Win NT 4.0, service pack 5, on a pc with a pentium II 350 MHz
cpu and 128 MB of RAM.

1. What software would be suitable for this application?

2. What type of file should this be recorded in (and/or converted to)?

Thanks for any help.

Almost anything will work, I suggest something like Sound Forge XP because it's cheap, reliable, and easy to use. Then you want to convert it to RealAudio 16 kbps max, end of story.

Browse/search the main site to find more about these topics iof interested...

Thx, Dragon. I downloaded Sound Forge
XP 4.5 (see: http://www.sonicfoundry.com/Products/ShowProduct.asp?PID=6 ). But, the 'demo' version
won't *record*, until *after* you pay for it. And, I'm wary of paying for it unless I know it is suited for this application, having been burned a number of times in the past.

But, assuming SF XP 4.5 is the way to go, should I record in PMA? Will I need RealPlayer G2 *Plus* to convert, or will the free one be okay? What is the file extension I will be converting to -- .rpa?

Thx again,

Reynolds
