Phantom Power

I was originally planning to buy a Shure SM-58 to record vocals on a BR-8, then I figured I may as well get a cheap condenser mic. Then I read a review of the BR-8 which said that there was no phantom power. Condenser mics need phantom power, right? Does this mean I can't use a condenser mic on a BR-8?

Not that you can't. You'll just have to pay a little more for a power supply. You can get a phantom power box that doesn't claim to be a mic pre for a lot less than a mic pre.

Thanks drstawl. So step me through the logistics of it then. Is it BR8 Mic Out-->Phantom Power box-->Condenser mic?

Is it worth getting a low-end condenser as opposed to a Shure SM-58 if I want a quality sounding recording?

The 58s are formidable. Condensers tend to pick up a lot of extraneous crap which may or may not be what you're after.
Pretty much from reading GS catalogs in the toilet....
And a lot of listening as well.
