I recently picked up a Fostex A8 8-track 15/ips reel to reel deck. I'm a total newb with this stuff, so I would like to ask you all about where I can get started. I've looked around online, but nothing is too specific for this model. It supposedly records quite nicely and sounds good, but I don't know how to use it.
Some types of things I don't know anything about:
what kind of reels to get (it came with 2 old tapes that have some simon and garfunkel recorded on them) or how to erase the ones it came with;
it has 4 rca inputs and 8 outputs, but no other controls. does this mean i need an off-board mixer? if so, what do you suggest? (I only plan on recording a couple of guitar tracks, some vocals, and maybe some other random things...not doing the whole band thing
what is the process of recording multi tracks? (it does 4 at a time, max) should i mix in garageband later? if so, how do i get on my computer?
