    Multiple speaker set up

When I see pictures of studios with multiple sets of monitors, I wonder if they are there to hear how a mix will translate in different speakers or are they all playing at once to maybe get a more broad frequency spectrum? If I were to set up multiple monitors are there rules on how far away they should be from one another, would one set interfere with another?

They are mostly used to get an idea of how something sounds on different speakers.

Well-designed studio monitors cover the frequency range accurately.

Mixing isn't that critical where passively vibrating boxes would cause an issue.

Ya, it is usually to hear what different speakers offer

Like the others have mentioned, it is just a way to hear the audio on different devices, kinda like rendering in different formats to compare each other with.

I use it to compare small vs full sound in translation (sealed box vs bass reflex). I actually have mine stacked on top of each other (Yamaha NS10M on top Yamaha HS8 on bottom). Interference is not a major issue. The most important things is room acoustics, and the spl of the mix while mixing.
