Low input on behringer x1832usb

Pls help. I hooked up behringer x1832 to mac. I get an input but it's crazy low. Gains are up on individual channels. Audio preferences I set dim recording level to 0db. Tried on both Logic Pro and garage band but same issue. Pulling my hair out, can't figure it out. If I record audio I can't see waveform - playback is ok. Have to then normalise each channel to just see waveform which is ridiculous. Correct red button on mixer is depressed. Headphone output on mixer gives me sound.
What could it be? USB cable?

Is there a USB volume -mix knob on the Behr? MY Mackie has one. Of course turning it up gives a bad whine frequency, which happens with most USB mixers. Have you read this thread?

Don't know macs at all but in Windows there is a level control for each input device.
Have a varder wherever mac keeps something similar.
W7 defaults to 100% i.e. far too hot and noisy. Macs might default the other way ? (which would actually make more sense IMHO!)
