Limiter in the Chain

I seem to get the best control by placing my limiter (Stealth IK Mult) at the end of a chain rather than at the front. Seems I can then push, compress a bit more than the other way around. I'm so new to this however and am thinking perhaps I'm doing it in a way that actually hinders.

My problem seems to be that if I push more volume through Stealth it distorts. But if I move it to the end of the chain, I can set my EQ as I like it and then control volumes via the limiter. Is this normal?

I'm guessing everyone has their own way and it's more of an art.

I'm all ears if anyone has advice.

A limiter is typically placed at the end of the chain. The whole point, most often, is to control the final volume/gain; to set a hard limit. It says to the signal, "thou shall not pass". So, then, it makes sense to have it after all other fx have been placed, since things like compression or EQ can affect the level of a signal.

Ah, great to hear that my ears are not deceiving me. Makes sense when you explain it in a simple way as you did. Thanks Andrushkiwt.
