Help with my podcast!

Hello all-

I'm having issues with my podcast recording and maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

I get a static crackle anytime someone speaks into the mics. It doesn't show up when when I run the playback on Adobe Audition, but when it's saved, the crackle appears. I remedied this by dropping the gain on my mixer and then upping the amplitude on the sound file itself. Regardless, I still have a static noise (hiss) in the background of all my recordings no matter what level I record at. It's getting pretty frustrating.

Here's the equipment I'm working with. Is it possible for someone on here to tell me how to use it to maximum efficiency? I just want a clean sounding recording for once.

I have:

3 MXL 990 Condenser Mics
Alesis Multi-mix8USB mixer
Adobe Audition

I'd really like it if someone could tell me how to set the levels on my mixer. It seems that the mics pick up a lot of distracting noise no matter what level I put it at.

Thanks in advance to any of you experts out there!
