when you say a pedal is first in the chain,

does that mean, first in line from the amp to guitar, or form the guitar to the amp?

for instants

(AMP) --------- pedal #1 ----- pedal #2 ---- pedal #3 ------- (guitar)

would number 1 or 3 be the first in line, I always thought it was #1 but iv had 2 people tell me itd be #3.

First in the chain would be the first device out of the guitar. Guitar, #1, #2, #3 etc.

I don't think this is DUMB QUESTION at all... the subject chosen was... Why didn't you put "Effect Chain order question" ? BTW, Track were right... but since we read alphabet from LEFT to RIGHT, I'd rather put the guitar in the most left, and the Amp on the right. Mixer & tracking gear not included...
