I have not experienced any difficulty in syncing ADATs. If you are punching into record in the middle of a song, they can take a few seconds to sync up. So while I was overdubbing a Pedal Steel part
the Engineer just had to start the tapes rolling a few measures before the punch.
Once they lock up, they stay in perfect sync while playing and recording.
This was a few years ago, and I think the new machines are even better!

The Alesis ADAT format was actually a major breakthrough in regards to syncronization was concerned. The true measure of how good any sync device works is in how long it takes to sync. Unless an ADAT is having some motor troubles, it will sync up to 16 ADAT's in about 5 seconds top! The standard for a professional sync device is full sync under 20 seconds. ADAT's are truely a fast syncing device.
