Yamaha HS50

Would the Yamaha HS50 monitors be all right to use as the main refrence for mixing and such?

If you add a subwoofer, yes, because they are a little weak in the bass region.

They don't sound 'nice' (that's what my HiFi is for) but very analytical,
if there's anything wrong with your mix you'll notice it.
Stereo imaging is good, and for vocals they are very good

I've just used them for a couple of days, so I still have to get used to them
and see how the first couple of mixes will sound on other systems,
but given the price my first impression is very good.

Hope that helps.

I'd prefer to use a 8in pair as a main reference with 5in for additionals... I already have the KRK V8s and I was thinking of getting those as cross references. If you don't have anything yet get the HS80ms and then a smaller speaker later for cross referencing... You can't get bass response with 5in monitors and the subs are intended as companions for the 8in kinds I believe.

I would be surprised if the Yamaha subwoofer was special designed for
the 8 inch monitors because IF a monitor needs a subwoofer it's the
5 inch version, not the 8 inch.
Anyway, the current available (non-Yamaha, too) subwoofers are adjustable
within a very wide range and should (and in my case, do) fit both Yamahas
very well.
