Getting a Loud Master - YouTube

I stumbled across this video, and I'm a little curious after seeing the .wav file. Doesn't this affect the dynamic range of the mix? I'm concerned that this method may muddy up the mix, or negatively affect the levels of each instrument. Am I wrong?

You're not wrong. But the original file used in the demo had no dynamics - only peaks to compress/limit to bring up all the rest of the volume.
My friend who mastered my CD says he is very used to seeing files that look like this - he calls them 'sausages'.

That waveform certainly wasn't representative of the volume difference... Maybe on the "Let's overdo it" part, but not the 3dB that actually didn't sound horrible...
