Question on limits to cuts/boosts

Quick question on boosts/cuts...

When using a software EQ is there a general limit for how many Dbs to cut/boost? For instance when applying a highpass filter on a guitar track is it ok to just cut down to oblivion?

I vaguely remember Ed posting something about this awhile back, but I can't seem to find it.

P.S. The title of the thread got all screwed up so I apologize for the misleading title.

Isn't it just a question of...

"whatever works" and "use your ears"?!?!?

I would tend to favour cutting over boosting, but if cutting to oblivion gives you the sound that is needed to fit the track into the mix properly, then do it!

If it sounds good, it IS good........

True, True :)

I guess I don't have much confidence in my ability to listen yet. I'll learn I guess, thanks for the reply. ;)

I could have sworn that I read something about software algorithems (sp) screwing up when too many dbs are toyed with.
