i was wondering if there is a "right" order of doing things when mixing --- i mean : first you do the graphic eq,then parametric, move on to compressing things...etc.

That's what we ALL do.I turn all the knobs till it kinda sounds like crap then I turn them some more
That's what we ALL do.
Anybody, at any level, who says differently is either lying or is relying on formulaic thinking in a non-formulaic art.Glad to see I'm doing the right thing, well if not the right thing then the majority thing
I mix it until it looks like this....then I know it's done.

Man, you really need to re-adjust your limiter... you've got about a second at the beginning, and a half second at the end that's nowhere even NEAR 0 dBFS.I mix it until it looks like this....then I know it's done.

man, you are so right in saying work on your recording technique... I won't even track unless I barely or don't have to eq when I listen to it on my monitor speakers!!!! That means I take hours to set up drums bascially... cause lets face it, guitar/vox is easy compared to drums.... Now, this is not to say I don't use eq, however it maybe just a 1-2 db range as opposed to some people I see pushing it at 10db somewhere!!!?? I'm like what the hell, your nuts. I truly believe people get lost in their mixes when to many eqs are added because you lose fundemental frequencies in the process. This may be the digital era, however unless your have drum replacement software I would suggest not wasting your time trying to polish a turd and start at the recording phase!First you get a balance. Most people start with drums and bass and then bring the rest in. As your bringing them in you do what needs to be done.
That maybe eq or compression.
You really should not assume that any effect (eq, compression) needs to be applied. If you find that eq must be applied to all your tracks then you need to work on recording technique.
