Please mix this

If some of the problem is trying to sing over the guitar, this just illustrates how important it is to set up your monitor mix (what you listen to in your headphones) just right. It needs to give you enough guitar to hear what you're singing over but, importantly, enough of you that you don't feel you have to strain to get over the backing track(s). Also, some singers respond well to having a bit of reverb on their voice (monitor only, NOT on what you're recording...others don't).

Basically, I spend a LOT of time setting up the monitor mix before we start tracking--and this generally pays dividends in the quality of the performance.
