mastering

Wavelab is good, but only when you know what you are doing, I use voxengo elephant a LOT for mastering, it's good enough for DIY mastering.

I use iZotrope to even out my mixes and get them all sounding uniform. I always save a copy of the original untouched mix. When I then send it off to a mastering studio, I include a commercial CD that I like in the same general style. I include a letter saying I would like to hear what they think should be done before the listen to my reference CD. Often what they do is perfect. I try to learn from it each time, hoping I'll get there. But for anything released commercially, I always use a mastering studio.
