    Unsigned Only Music competition

I stumbled across this one today. From my research at first glance I’ve decided it’s not a scam, any more than American Idol isn’t a scam. However I’m not going to win American Idol either, and as far as I know American Idol doesn’t charge you $30 for a submission.

That being said, for me it doesn’t work. I’m interested in writing/composing music, not performing and it seems they want the entire package that they can sign and market. Nobody wants to see my fat butt up on stage, not to mention, you usually have to be able to play an instrument fairly well. :-)

It seems to make sense, the cost of the prizes are much cheaper than a talent scout’s annual salary.
Anyway, $30 is about the cost of getting one song properly copyrighted.
According to Wiki, they can actually boast a few known named acts as past winners.
I just thought some people here might be interested.

    thanks

If I was young, talented, attractive and had $30 and a pro mixed and mastered pop tune I would enter. I would still lose.

Odds are against it for sure.

Out of your list, $30 is all I got going for me. :-)

    I'm all of those things!*

    * Using a pretty loose definition of young, talented, attractive, and having pro mixes/masters. And also "pop" tune. Synth-driven punk songs about Cthulhu probably go under the "rock" category, huh?

Having won a contest for unsigned bands myself (Scion put it on), I can say that winning things like these can be fun and advantageous as far as building relationships with key people, but it can also give you a warped view of why you make music in the first place. The people in the business of selling music all seem to have lost the soul of it completely. If you sell music, it is a product like any other, and any extraneous variables (like whether or not you actually like the music you're selling) are completely unimportant, and can actually get in the way of your job. It's sad to be around these people.
