Opinions wanted re web site feature

Our band has a web site, and a difference of opinion about how much interactive content it ought to feature. One view is that we ought to have a public forum, where regstered users can place posts. Another view is that such a feature invites irrelevant content, and serves no useful business purpose. We do have a e-mail link through which people can contact us, and a way for people to sing up for e-mail notification about upcoming gigs. The same debate exists with respect to a poll feature, which lists a number of songs and asks viewers to vote as to whether or not the band should do them.

Do you think inviting public particpation on your band's website, as described above, is in general a good thing? If you have added a forum feature to your site, did it prove to be a good way to attract people to gigs? Did it have any negative consequences?

A forum feature does indeed invite off-topic conversation. But it's a really good way for fans to interact with the band. It makes the fans feel that the band is more accessible and friendly.

The email sign-up thing is also a good idea. Keep everyone who doesn't visit the forum informed of upcoming shows or important news....just don't flood their inbox with crap.

I don't like the poll idea, though. If they want to voice their opinion on songs, it can be done in a private email to the band or on the forum.

Meh, just my opinion. This all being said, all of these things have been done.
