feedback from a non rap-oriented listener

Hey,

I never visit here, so I thought I'd check things out. I have noticed that the best rap records not only have great beats and a rapper with a great style, but that the songs had structure. Neither 'smooth' or 'pants' give a real sense of song structure.

Not all of the rap recordings that have stood out over the last 10 to 15 years had a strong song structure, but most have. These two cuts song very much like the beat was started and the rapper raps.

Phrasing (called "flow" here?) is also important. Most others are correct in saying that the muffled mix on the vox is part of what hides the phrasing here.

Also, while hip hop slang and dialect down-plays traditional uses of english language structure and grammar, many of the most compelling rappers actually use diction and vocabulary to great effect. I realize that casual conversation (which is what forum communication is) will not necessarily reflect this, but to the point of not going for the overt sexual approach - maybe an alternate approach will work? Perhaps putting some lyrical twists in the rhymes will help distinguish your efforts.

Good luck!

I won't comment on the artistic merit of the song, but from a sound quality & mix perspective both of those songs are absolutely horrible.

Boomy, muddy, distorted, noisy - and all NOT in a good way. If you're serious about doing your own recording, and care about sound quality, then you have a lot of work to do to learn/develop engineering skills.

Maybe check out a few books on basic recording techniques, and hang around some of the engineering forums at this site to learn techniques.

what r u doing in these neck of the woods? i thought u were a rock n roller? :p

rar it up people.

I think the best advice I could give you, chica, is to find what drives you. Rap about that, keep varied and keep recording and writing. I have the problem, I've been working on my writing for ages but not that much my flow so it's well....... not the best to be said nicely :D. But keep at it, you'll get there.

You might wanna look into getting beats from producers and working. Don't think commercial, etc. at the moment - just get good.
