Doubling up vocals

Just a quick question. I have been arguing with one of my rappers about this.

Do you guys double up the vocals? I have noticed this in almost every rap song. Also, do you lay the fist vocals down then go back and rap over it on another track.

I have cool edit 2.0 and I try to double up the vocals in multitrack(clone the track) and add a little delay to one of them but it sounds like shit.

One more thing. I need a compressor. Any suggestions on which one to get (about the $200 price range). I don't want to use cool edit for compression

Thanks for the help

compressor for under $200...? FMR RNP is the standard response to this.

i dont think you need delay on the doubled vocals. generally when using the doubling technique, there is already some inherent slight variation in pitch and time, which is what makes it cool (bigger).

not all hip hop has doubled vocals, but the majority of new pop hip hop sure does. thank you clear channel for making all pop hip hop songs sound the same!
