Zoom R24 drum patterns

I'm trying to make my own patterns but the bar length is in parens and apparently not editable. I had to copy a 4 bar pattern into the slot I wanted to program. The ProaudioDVDs tutorial seems to imply I can change it, as doea the menu.

I also can't seem to copy sime patterns into some positions. Memory is still at 41%. Its not full. Can they be locked?
 
Parens is a common shortening of parentheses. It shows as (4) instead of 4 and in that case it can't be modified. But nowhere does the manual describe locking patterns.

There isn't a zoom forum here. There is a zoom users forum however they're not processing new users. Google searching seemed to indicate that this forum was the next best thing available for in depth discussion of Zooom recording products, it's actually how I found out about this place.
