using computer as a synth sound module

Can anyone comment on the advantages/disadvantages of using a laptop computer as a synth sound module for live performance/recording?

I have been thinking about buying a used synth sound module or sampler for use with my old Casio as a keyboard trigger. However, with all the synth software on the market, I thought I should investigate the feasibility/costs of buying a used laptop and using it as a sound module. I figure such a setup would be very flexible in terms of synth sounds as well as future uses. However, I don't know enough about computer music setups to know what I need to set up something like this -- or how much it would cost.

I assume I need at least the following:

1) used laptop computer (what kind of system/memory requirements?)
2) special soundcard and/or MIDI interface device
3) some kind of software music system
4) synth samples themselves

I would appreciate any advice people can give me on the feasibility, costs, and specific items I would need to do this at as low a cost as possible. Thanks.
