USB Keyboard connection loss. Expected behavior?

So I have a usb keyboard controller: M-Audio O2 25 key, all drivers updated. My DAW is a Win7 64 bit.
I jump between a few apps: Sonar X2, Ableton Live 8, Reaper, Reason 6.

The problem is every time I open a different app I get no midi input from the keyboard. When I check the settings in the current program the O2 is always listed (as if it's being detected)

To fix this issue I actually have to unplug the USB cable and then plug it back in.

Does this sound like a problem with the M-Audio O2 or is this behavior common to other controllers as well?

Any input is appreciated!
 
Yep drivers are up to date. I'll add that the same thing was happening on my old DAW that I just upgraded from last year. The only other variable that I haven't tried is another keyboard. I'll see if I can get ahold of one.
