raising piano volume

I'm trying to record some solo piano from a roland xv-88 into cakewalk 9. I've got the input on my echo mia soundcard mixer all the way up and the volume on the xv-88 all the way up and i still can't get my level to 0db. I don't want to have to normalize to fix this problem because when i do it draws too much attention to noise. What can i do about this? would another external mixer help with this? if so, what, where and how much? Thanks for any input. this place is great.

Does the xv-88 have a way of adjusting the volume of the patch itself, as well as a main volume output slider? Maybe if you crank up the internal patch volume you can get the level better. Just guessing here, all I have is a nano-piano. :) If not, yes an external preamp would help you. What about other devices into your soundcard, have you tried running the outputs of a CD-Player into it just to see what level you get?
