Probably a newb question but here it is, Stripping down pc for DAW

Twenty year drummer new to recording.
My most recent issue is:
I want to know what would be the best way to go about optimizing my PC to be used only for recording.
This is what I have:
Drums
7 mics-------5 dynamic, 2 condenser
Alesis multimix 16 firewire mixer
Acoustica Mixcraft 5
Sony Acid Pro 7

HP m8300f
Vista home premium 32bit
AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 6000+ 3.00 GHz
3GB RAM

Any suggestions?
I am willing to do what ever is best, however, I am a student and a drummer so money is scarce
