my built in sound card wont record from line in

built on to the motherboard is a soundcard with yamaha xg-50,and the driver in cakewalk shows as ess solo

i have checked on everything i possibly could in the mixer section of windows,i have tried updating drivers,it seems i have tried everything.

my question is:is this a problem with my soundcard or my computer....because im looking to buy a pci audio card but will it record from the line in?
 
assuming you know a decent amount about connections ill assume its the soundcard.. i had the same problem using the soundcard built into my motherboard and always had to use the mic input..

spend 20 bucks on a pci soundcard and the difference will still be night and day..

by the way , what are you trying to record ? if your using a mic be sure that its properly preamped before heading in to the line in.. alot of other low level signals could also benefit from a little preamplification too..
