the dreaded delta 66

Pisces 7378 has had more problems trying to get his delta soundcard working than anyone should have to put up with. I'm looking at the Delta 66 because it has the features I want, but I'm dreading the possibility of getting into the same pit Pisces 7378 finds himself in. What are the chances of that happening, do you think? Has anyone else had major headaches getting their Delta card to work?

dobro,

you plan to get the Delta66 in S'pore? who has them....?

The last time I checked, Sinamex has them but the price is pretty outrages...

as far as reliability , the delta cards appear to be top notch....if you have the right drivers and understand what the delta cards do, you shouldn't have any problems.....two good things about the deltas: low cost hardware solution plus driver support...m audio had some of the first wdm drivers , though i think the soundblaster had wdm support first.

Leeking - I haven't started shopping yet, but I'll check Sinamex tomorrow and let you know if anything interesting turns up - I've found them to have fair prices in the past.

Okay, you get the 66 at AudioMidi in the US for $340, which is $595 Singapore. You can get the 66 at Sinamex for $650, after they give you the standard 10% discount. I think that price is inclusive of GST. Not outrageous at all.

Dobro, I know you are probably strapped for $$$ (online porn gets expensive)...but here (US) the Omni Studio goes for $60 more and you get everything that the 66 has plus 2 badass preamps (better than Mackie's), extra inputs, 4 stereo aux inputs, 2 headphone outs and 1 mono effect send per channel....dont know if you need all this but it is nice for the few extra $$$.....

the omni studio is $379 at Musicians Friend

dobro,

yup, that seems to be a fair price.... :) ( I didn't inticipate the 10% discount)

but they quoted me on the Delta1010 for US$780, (after 10% discount), which is pretty high... especially after converting them to Malaysia Ringgit!!! :(

I agree with Gidge on the omnistudio, but I think Sinamex doesn't have that package.

Can someone in the US buy it and ship it to you or is that illegal?....

I think you can, nothing wrong with that... but with the shipping cost, it's gonna be pretty much the same thing, plus support/service would be almost impossible if any problem should come out.

Leeking - I'll check with Sinamex about the omni.

Gidge - can you bypass the pres on the omni? I've gone the channel strip route and don't need or want pres on my soundcard. If you can't bypass 'em, I wonder what the effect of running a signal through two pres would be? LOL Thanks for the link to MF.

Dobro, you can just go into one of the line inputs if you go that route.....what I like about the omni is the aux channels for effects.....it functions pretty much as a smaller mixer...Im kicking myself for only getting the Audiophile.....what card do you have now and how many inputs do you need.....Delta has quite a few different cards......If you dont need the pres there might be other options....

I've got a Gadgetlabs Wave 824 with 8 ins and outs, but I don't need that many - I was 'leaving room for growth' when I bought that card, but I was being unrealistic. I only need four ins and outs.

What's wrong with the 824? Well, I've never been able to get the spdif working, and Gadgetlabs died before they could help me with it. I need the spdif to hook up digitally to my Lexicon unit. Also, recently, the 824's giving me sample rate grief.

I need spdif, I don't need pres, I want 4 ins and outs, I like my audio editor (Cool Edit), and I don't use a mixer. That sounds like the Delta 66, although I like the two headphone outs on the omni.

Leeking - Sinamex has the 66 and has the other bit that goes with it to make the omni bundle, but they sell the two pieces separately, not as a bundle, and the price of the other bit is, as you say, outrageous ($415 Singapore after discount). When I asked why, the answer was: "The Asian mentality is different."

Some salesmen are so stupid...

huh??? what kind of answer is that???

anyway, good thing you don't really need it...;) too bad for people like me... :(

BTW, dobro, where is THE place to get recording stuffs in S'pore?

Omni Studio

I've just ordered an Omni Studio from Music Technology Learning Center in the U.S.A. Their price was US$399, plus US$31 to ship to Hong Kong where I live. Musicians Friend were cheaper ($379) but won't ship outside the U.S.A.

I read Pisces 7378's horror story with concern as well - I'm hoping I can avoid his nightmare, as I'm buying a new computer. Thought I'd work backwards from the soundcard, taking advantage of the excellent advice on this forum (and with help from my neighbour who is a systems specialist by day and a computer video editing junky by night).

I'll let the forum know how it all turns out over the next month or so.

Leeking - some of the interesting places are Sinamex, Studer, and Team 108. There's a place that handles AKGs, a place for Audio Technica, and another that handles Sennheisers and Neumanns. I know a guy who sells Rodes cheaper than others.

Recently, though, I ordered a Mindprint Envoice from Australia and the price was good because the Aussie buck is so weak right now.

None of 'em are good :D, but most of them will give you discounts if you ask.

How about KL? What's it like buying gear there?

well, the only place in KL (or in Malaysia in fact) where you can get recording stuff is Bentley Music.... but they are filled with snobbish sales people....

I think S'pore's music stuff is still cheaper compare to Malaysia even after the conversion. :(

In fact, so far I haven't got any recording stuff locally... most of them were from Toronto (where I was last year) and used monitor speakers from a local studio here in Penang....

I got to know Sinamex cos they have a dealer here in Penang.

Australia.... can you show me some link for Australia's music store?.... :) thanks!
