digital sound processing

im sorry i know this is not the right forum for this question, but its the only one from where i think i can get an answer.
does anybody know how to perform (i dont mean with which programs, but with which algorithms) sound processing like equalizing or dynamics on digital (PCM) sound data? or at least a forum or website where i can get informed? tnx in advance
