What does it mean if your sound card has balanced or unbalanced inputs or outputs, is this a bad thing if they are unbalanced?

its not a big thing really. "Balanced" refers to a type of signal that is in such a phase as to cancel out ground noise. Basically, balanced inputs are good because when you connect your balanced soundcard to other balanced equipment with balanced cables you should theoretically get signal noise.

I wouldn't worry about it much. More experienced users can fill you in a bit more.

If you have long cable runs, balanced ins, outs and cables may help preventing noise being picked up. A soundcard is usually connected to a mixer, using short cables. Thus, it makes less of a difference.

Keep in mind that not only the inputs need to be blanced. The outputs and cables do as well, in order to get any benefit.
