If you decide to build a PC yourself (definitely the way to save money) then I would suggest http://www.pricewatch.com/ .
It's a search engine...you select an item such as a CPU, motherboard, whatever, and it brings up a price list (least expensive first) and the web sites when you can go to order your item. I saved alot of money going this route and put together a pretty decent PC. It's not as hard as you think. As for non-computer items such as mics, mixers, monitors, I would suggest the following:
