upgrading and interfacing q

FALKEN

I am thinking about upgrading my layla interface, which does wordclock, spdif, ADAT optical I/O, and 8 analog ins/outs. I would like 2 or 8 channels of badass conversion, and If possible I would like to use the spdif or optical inputs on my layla. I would also like to take advantage of a better wordclock. The layla is great but i have gotten comments that the sounds are "2 dimensional". I was looking at apogee but a lot of records recorded with apogee don't really sound that great to me so now I'm not exactly sure. I was looking at the RME multiface, I'm not sure if that can function without installing the PCI card...any ideas here? Can I just use the adat and word clock outs through my layla without installing any software. 8 channels would be nice because it would allow me to xfer tape onto the pc but not completely neccessary.
