stuttering...buffers...help please

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi- Haven't been here in awhile but good to be back. I just switched from recording on a Korgd1600 (outgrew it) to a DAW. Here's my setup.
HP 3.2 gighz
1 gig sdramm
250 gig hd
Soundcard:Tascam us-122
Programs installed: Adobe audition, internet access, email, Norton Antivirus

Here's my problem. Slight stutters after recording a few tracks. I've run msconfig and shut down any programs running in the background, defragged the hd, disabled my antivirus software during recording. I have not played with the buffer setting as I'm not sure what to do with it. I believe the latency setting is set at 256.
Someone help me on what buffer settings do.
Any other suggestions from the pros out there? Thanks!!

Raise the buffers up from 256.
Try 512 or 1024.
Buffers are the number of samples moved to memory.
Lower buffers will allow for low latency live input processing whereas higher buffers will help ease the load on the processor during playback.
A higher buffer should get you sorted on your playback issue.
