Silence improvement?

SoundCard

Member
Has anyone added a Focusrite Scarlet Solo (or similar) between their mic and the computer and noticed any real improvement in the end result noise level?
If so, does anyone know why? What is it actually doing?

Thanks...

Hi,
It's just like the microphone in your hand is better than the one built into your laptop,
or the speakers with your hifi are better than the ones built into your TV.

The Scarlet, or any standalone audio interface, has all the same components as you'd find in a computer soundcard but better.

For noise in particular, balanced audio is probably a big contributor.
Most soundcards accept stereo over two conductors and ground. That's unbalanced audio. Any interference picked up along the way stays.
An interface will use two conductors and ground per channel and use super-magic-technology to remove any noise that was picked up from nearby electronics along the way.

Often interfaces will have their own power supply which, you'd like to think, is filtered better than the PC supply.
They also live in their own separate box instead of being very close to other noise emitting chips and devices.

In short, it's not doing anything different. It's just doing it better. :)
