I just did a recording for my school using an old soundcraft board and using the main out into a two track interface. I have always had problems in the past with so many different interfaces adding noise and hissing because i was using the pres on the interface but i just tried this method and its so clean. Is this a common thing to do? Should i buy an external pre or a mixing board like i just used?

If your only using two channels, I don't really see the benefit of a mixer. I would go for an external pre. Buy a pre for the same price as an entire mixer and you know it's good.

But i would like a mixer just for the sound stuff in my room. Just to have some more connections. Saves me from unplugging and replugging. Will getting an external pre solve noise issues?

Well then get a mixer haha. An external pre is usually higher quality. But hey if you say it worked for that soundcraft mixer, than by all means get one.
