running programs from 'strange' locations

I was given a couple of programs ages ago and did not back them up the right way...I have them on disk but no setup.exe..so I sent them to my documents..and although they don't appear in program files ,,they seem to run quite well..is this ok to run them from my documents or is it a NO NO..

Sure, if they run.. leave it. Many older programs do not require any registry modifications/dll's etc, and will run just fine standalone.
