On my desktop just above the taskbar in the right hand corner there is:- Windows 98 4.10.2222 .It is in white writing with a black shadow.Looking around I have discovered it is most likely a version number.

Where did it come from and why has it appeared And HOW do I get rid of the sucker. Thanks to all involved.

John , no it's not that I've checked that part out.
according to what I can make out on the net it's a version number of windows 98se but I can't find how to get rid of it.
cheers-peter..

Weird...

I have an Release Candidate version of 2000. I was getting the same thing.

I went to background, which I don't have one, but selected one, applied it, then selected None again, and it was gone. But, now the desktop on boot up seems to show up a little slower, but, all my services seem to load faster.

Weird things indeed.....

is this a new install or did it just appear out of nowhere?
Actually I had visited a window tech "tweak" site I downloaded a couple programs but did not install them .I deleted them instead. Maybe I caught something from them I hope it's not a fatal disease!

this should get rid of it for you:Method 1
--------

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

Just be careful with your registry as its pretty easy to kill your computer. Hope this helps randy5235

Use Registry Editor to delete the following registry key, and then restart your
computer:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PaintDesktopVersion

Method 2
--------

Use the TweakUI tool to turn off the display of the build number. To use TweakUI,
you must first install it. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

2. Use Windows Explorer or My Computer to open the Tools\Reskit\Powertoy folder
on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

3. Right-click the Tweakui.inf file, and then click Install to install TweakUI.

4. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

5. Double-click TweakUI.

6. On the General tab, click the Show Windows Version On Desktop check box to
clear it.

7. Click OK.

8. Restart your computer.

Thanks Randy5235
