midi connection ok with pc off?

i am going to add my pc to my midi system via the "midi to gameport" connection on sound card. should my midi network for keyboards still work even if the computer is turned off? or, would the computer have to be on? I don't want to leave pc on unless I'm recording so I would frequently have it off. my goal was to not have to plug/unplug cables for different modes.

I don't think that will work... I believe the PC has to be on (I don't believe there's a Thru on those things either, is there?
 
That depends totally on your MIDI path. If you plan on chaining them in series, then yes the computer would have to be turned on unless it was the last device in the chain and you don't need a midi return. If, however, you have a MIDI hub (which allows individual IN/OUT cables to each device), you can shut down any device and the rest of them will work without any problem.

I guess the simple answer is that the sound card won't pass MIDI info with out being turned on.
