MacBook Pro?

I am looking into getting some home recording equipment. Currently, I am using a MacBook Pro laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (speed is 2.53 GHz) and a 4 GB memory. I am leaning towards buying Pro Tools, but I am concerned about filling up my computer's memory and slowing it down. If I were to buy a 2 terabyte external hard drive, would it be possible for me to hook it up to my computer and send all the files there so as not to negatively effect the computer's speed and usability? Or am I going to have to possibly purchase an entirely different computer to use solely for recording? As you can tell, I'm completely new at this, any and all help is greatly appreciated!

You left out the only important bit.

What size is your MBP hdd and how much space have you used on it?

External HDD is recommended for pro tools audio sessions, although personally, i never bothered.

If you buy an external drive, there's no need to move all your stuff unless you really want to. Just make sure any sessions you create go on the new drive.
