Latency issues while monitoring.

Total noob here.
I'm a guitar player attempting to enter the world of digital recording.
Just got a yamaha audiogram 3.
It came with Cubase AI5.
Had problems installing Cubase, so I went with Mixcraft 5(freebie).

I plug the gtr into the yamaha, then into the pc.
I have a backing track playing in Mixcraft.
Monitoring with headphones.

Even with my device settings at WaveRT, the best I can get is a 20ms delay when I play along.
ASIO gives me no sound at all.

Obviously this is not acceptable, but I don't know how to cure it.

My PC is a dual core 3.0gig cpu's, 2 gig ram, onboard audio, and I am running Vista.
I don't think my system is lacking.

I did manage to get Cubase installed, but I have the same problem.

How can I attempt to get synchronized with the backing track?

Will an aftermarket soundcard help, or am I just missing something in the setup?

Did the Audiogram come with an ASIO driver and if so, did you install it?

Sounds like you're using the stock WDM drivers, which has an automatic, unchangeable, 30ms latency. If the Audiogram came with an ASIO driver, install that and select it in your DAW settings. If all else fails, use this:

ASIO4ALL - Universal ASIO Driver

Cheers :)

Had to download the driver for it.
The ASIO4all didn't seem make any difference.
Maybe I need to mess with it some more...
I am monitoring from the headphone jack on the pc.

That could be your problem. Use the headphone jack on the interface and use its included hardware input monitoring function. That thing has hardware direct monitoring, right?

I changed both my input and output devices to the yamaha. Plugged the phones into the yamaha. I can't hear anything. I'll mess with it some more. I probably missed something.

Got it...

I had my device settings wrong.
With the phones in the yamaha, and ASIO settings tweaked a bit, I now have synced monitoring.
My day is made!
