imac and USB recording

Help!... digital recording on iMAC (USB)

Hi, I need some help to setup my imac to record mostly guitars, vocal, and percussion. I am completely new to using a computer to record, but I would like to get into digital recording now. I need to use my imac until I can get a G4 tower. Can anyone tell me hardware (USB?) and software combinations that they have had success with? I imagine that I don't need midi interface unless using synth keyboard or guitar. Is that right? Any problems or equipment to avoid?

Tascam id coming out with a new product called the US-428. It's a control interface to your computer through USB. The price is $479 - the cheapest one out there. The only thing is that it can only record 4 tracks simulanteously - that's all USB can support. It is bundled with Cubasis VST software and should be released in the next week or so.
