I think I've decided on my new recording setup...

...but I'd welcome any comments/criticsms, etc...

My recording needs vary from 'live' recording of vocals, guitars, drums, etc, to scoring for film/TV/multimedia, etc.

I have: a P3 550mhz with 128mb ram and a UDMA-66 13GB hard drive, Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 with stacks of DirectX FX, Gigasampler, Acid, plus others, an RDL Audio Manufacturing Ltd Master Mix 8/2 desk with phantom power, a Sony minidisk deck for mastering, an internal CDR.

I propose to add:

1) an Aark 24 (using the desk as a mic preamp/mixer) for recording/playback

2) a Roland Sound Canvas SC-8850 (USB) as my primary sound source.

My main concerns are the quality of the desk for recording (it's fine live) and the quality of the sounds (especially orchestral) of the Roland SC. Also the obvious question of all-round compatability.

Any thoughts apreciated.

Mark.
