How can I start recording on my computer cheaply!

I need advice on the basics of digital recording. I have a decent computer but not a good sound card and nothing else. I used to have a 16 track analogue studio (Fostex) and am used to doing everything by hand not computer! There's so much out there to choose from and I haven't a clue what to buy! I have about £500 to play with and will need to buy everything bar the computer with this e.g. microphones, stands, soundcard, sequencer etc.

what are your input/output needs and what sources will you be recording?...
 
I have a TINY AN32 HOME PLUS 1000 with 30gb hard drive and a cd rewriter . The soundcard, according to my brother, is crap and I will need to get a decent one.

I want to record drums, both miked and sampled. Also acoustic guitar, keyboards and lots of overdubbed vocals.

I'm a bit of a techophobe and am only a beginner but I want a simple multitracking package that even an idiot could use!.
