high priced cables

Hi John. I worked for a networks component company(not quite planes!)

They made up 1,000s of RJ45-RJ45 (and other configs) every week. Each one was tested for continuity and they began to get a few failures, like 0.2%.

I had happened to draw myself a new AMP crimp tool from stores and then did the unprecedented thing, I read the instructions!

This told me that the tool and die faces should be lightly lubricated every 1000 ops with a light machine oil (WD-40 was fine) and the dies replaced every 10,000 ops iirc.

"They" were doing none of this and just running the dies till they failed!

So, I repeat, crap is crap but further, "good" can be MADE crap!

Dave.
